Kung Fu: Chicken Flavor Stars: *
Notes: Well, as far as this stuff goes, I can truthfully say NOTHING SPECIAL GPING ON HERE. I really was hoping I would be able to beat up bad guys and work it like Jackie Chan after eating it, but this was not even remotely the case. Basically a bowl of chicken flavor noodles. Very much like your standard Americanized noodles you’d find in a big supermarket.

Kim Ve Wong Brand Jaopai Series: Vegetarian Instant Noodles Mixed Flavor Bowl Stars: ZERO
Notes: Never thought it possible to give a zero star rating to noodles, but this one gets it for sure. Sometimes, the noodles I try are almost too hot to eat, but I eat them anyways. However, these noodles weren’t at all palatable; they were horrid. A bowl with a retort pouch and a sesame oil packet and base. Very nasty, due to the low quality retort pouch innards. I wouldn’t wish this stuff on my worst enemy. Perhaps tasting the food they make prior to allowing it to leave the factory might be a good tip.

A One: Bun Tom Shrimp

Stars: ***

Notes: This stuff was really good – had had a few beers beforehand and decided to
try it as a preventative hangover cure. Didn’t work all that great for it’s intended purpose, however it was good. The package contained a packet of dried green onions, seasoning oil and soup base. The noodles [rice variety] were strangely enough sealed in their own plastic bag. I cooked the noodles and green onions and dropped in a couple eggs and then dropped that mixture [drained of course] into a bowl with the oil and flavor base and stirred. Was a very burly dealio.

UPDATE! There is a new review I did of this product HERE. In this review below, I made the package incorrectly!

So here’s some new stuff we picked up at the 99 Ranch Market – which is within walking distance now that we’ve moved! It’s very nice to live in an area close to Asian stores! This looked rather interesting in its mundaneness as well as its industrialness…

Soup base and soybean paste.

Tapioca starch was listed in the ingredients. The froth was tight and viscous.

The finished product (click image to enlarge) – a rather dull looking bowl of noodles.

Finished (Click image to enlarge). So the upshot: the paste is extremely salty and has an almost slightly fermented tone to it. The noodles don’t really do much for me – they’re rather cheap, and I do mean rather… I do find myself ingesting this bowl differently this time: I eat some of the noodles and then sip some soup. It seems only right to ingest it this way. I find that rather interesting to be honest. Also, the soybean paste lent a huge amount of grease, allowing for a sea of shimmering beads of lustrousness at the top. So as far as a rating goes, I’m going to have to hit this one with a 2.4 stars. Nothing special, nothing bad, somewhat interesting, butu not enough to bump it a tenth of a point up to be exactly average.

Hot out this morning! Walked over to 99 Ranch for my daily fix.

I was in the mood for something a little different and picked something new and kind of safe. My stomach’s been a little funky – gut-bomb burritos in enchilada sauce and ice cream last night I wager.

So this must be super chicken / king chicken of some sort? When I opened the package, I noticed a scent. A scent very familiar to me! Smelling the smell, I nicked a little piece of the dried noodle cake and popped it in my mouth. Yep – pre-seasoned instant noodle cakes – very much like the Nissin 1958 style stuff. You could eat it like potato chips! It’s perfect for those who can’t figure out how to measure two cups of water and put the noodles in it and apply heat underneath…

A lonely seasoning packet.

Had a lot of seasoning and some green onions too! This stuff’s doing pretty good so far, but what about the taste?

The final word on this one is that its pretty good stuff (click image to enlarge). It’s kind of fun to make as you can have a taste of the noodles as an appetizer. It also uses 2 cups instead of 2 1/4 like the Nissin Demae ramen which I found annoying since our measuring cup goes straight to 1/2 cup measure. The noodles are thinner than your standard instant noodle too. It all binds together in a nice little meal. I’m giving it 3.5 out of 5 stars. Not ultra fancy, but they didn’t have to put on this much of a show for artificial chicken flavor. Besides, any package that portrays a happy about-to-be-slaughtered ingredient on the front bears a certain amount of honor.

So it was ‘Summer Exotica Days’ at 99 Ranch and had me, Kitten and Andy all together trying new stuff. Andy tried some furikake on rice, bean thread noodles, plum and green tea drink ad shrimp wontons. Kitten picked my ramen today – the picture of the cartoon cow did it for her.

Two packets…

Just like the chicken, the dry powder was a little nicer with the addition of the green onions. As the chicken flavor as well, the noodles were pre-seasoned and could be eaten on their own. The seasoning oil was well, oily as you’ll see.

So here’s the finished product (click image to enlarge), all done and unadulterated.

And just look at that shine! Separate drops of grease dance on the surface of this bowl of noodles reminding me of the scene in Tampopo where the ramen guy waxes philosophic about the grease being shimmering jewels.

So – how was it? Very tasty! Not much as far as spiciness really. As far as the noodles, they tasted quite good – a bit thinner than their Japanese counterparts. The broth was very flavorful – had a deep and robust flavor. I really would recommend this to anyone – and to not shy away because of the spicy label. I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars.

So was thinking what ramen to pick today and then saw this. On special for 33 cents I couldn’t pass it up. I also got a 33 cent bunch of green onions for the dinner I’m making tonight so a pretty cheap trip to the ole 99 Ranch. So Onion flavor – should be interesting…

Looks like soup base and some greasy oily concoction… Hmmm…

Upon further inspection the floaters in the oil are very weird looking…

So soup base packet was powder and green onions and the goopy weirdness was oil and onions that were fried almost to a burn. Very interesting.

All in all a good bowl of noodles (click image to enlarge). Very oniony – in fact onion was more prevalent than I really expected for 33 cents, so that impressed me. Also, they were Unif / Tung – I’s edible noodles and so I decided to partake of a bite before cooking. This is always a treat. Everything taken into consideration, these get a 3.65 out of 5 stars.

This is Christine’s first official ramenrater appearance! Look for more reviews by her soon!

Three packages of flavoring – powder, seasoned oil and vegetable.

Ready for the pain.

Christine’s review: Lots of delicious, meaty flavor. The seasoning was really good – wasn’t as salty like a lot of the other noodles I’ve had. Had a flavor that reminded me of something I’ve had before but can’t remember what. The only bad thing about it was the heartburn afterwards. I give this a 3.2 out of 5 stars rating!

So here’s the second Wei Lih product to enter my stomach through my facehole. Artificial beef flavored stock huh? Is that what you get when you boil an artificial Steer with flowers on its head?

Two packets – a powder and then the thick stuff. Very clumpy.

It looked kind of neat in the bowl and all – like some kind of artwork.

Review (click image to enlarge)? 1 out of 5 stars. Yup. Usually I complain about too salty? This stuff hasn’t much flavor and is very weird. It tastes like fake something – not real beef-like. I don’t like it. The noodles are somewhat okay. I don’t like the way it tastes. It’s just plain odd. I don’t like it. I liked the other Wei Lih thing, but I don’t like this.

#98: Unif / Tung-I Chah Chiang Flavor Ramen Noodles

Okay so thought I’d try something with an odd name today. Yes, I thought of the money ch-ching sound too when I read the flavor… It’s a Taiwanese flavor from what I found on Google – spicy and oniony.

Two packets oily gunky stuff and a powdery one.

It looks a bit like a bird poop or perhaps a squished grasshopper – I like that my food today will resemble poo or entrails!

So end product is here. It smelled a little oniony and a little spicy and had almost a coffee smell. Christine identified it as an almost burnt peanut shell aroma. So it tastes a little odd… The broth is kind of thick I suppose and very very dark. The noodles are of a reasonable consistency. The taste? Kind of like dark sludgy water – like you’d expect pond water to be like but tasty. It isn’t at all bad, but not really great. The name is neat. I give 2.5 out of 5 stars.

So today we have some artificial onion flavor noodles. New flavor eh? That’s pretty awesome! This packet is rather fascinating though…

So two little packets – powder and oil. What could they contain? What makes something taste onion-like artificially, and why the need? I mean, Vegetarians are kind of out here; onions are vegetables last time I checked.

So how does one make fake onion flavor? Well, the ingredients on the seasonings list include shallot, sugar, dried chives, spices and artificial pork flavor. Chives and shallots? Those are practically onions already in my book…

So here’s a prepared bowl of Ve Wong Kung-Fu Artificial Onion Flavor. You know what it tastes like? It tastes like chicken ramen with maybe one enormous bag of Funyun seasoning dumped in. No joke; I don’t know why I am at all surprised by this but yep – this tastes like Funyuns. If you don’t know what Funyuns are, use Wikipedia. It has this fake onion, kind of buttery very salty taste. I’m not bummed out but not impressed. I’m giving this one 2.75 out of 5 stars. Its different but not in a way adding any kind of oomph to the flavor spectrum. This makes me this of after school dumping pounded Funyuns in a pack of chicken Maruchan.

Been awhile since I’ve had rice noodles – let alone artificial Chinese beef flavored broth!

As you can see, the noodles look different in the bag. They don’t crunch up in the bag the same by any means…

Oil packet and a seasoning powder packet – very basic here.

Here they are in the bowl.

Sp here’s the finished product. Beef flavor is there but the rice noodles don’t soak it up. In fact, the broth and noodles act like separate entities, almost like a sandwich and chips on the side. They don’t play well together. This may just be the way it is as far as rice noodles are concerned. The rice noodles were extremely thin and of a nice firmness and consistency – a little chewier than regular noodles you find in these instant noodles packs. All in all, it wasn’t bad. I’m giving this one a 2.85 out of 5 stars – it was tasty and interesting and would be nice to have any time. It was kind of light.

So if I’ve counted right, this is ramenrater review number 93. 93 different kinds – holy crap… Once I get to 100 I’ll put on a pink tutu and wet my pants or something I don’t know… Anyways, here’s some Ve Wong Sesame Chicken flavor.

Here’s the sesame – was a decently sized and filled packet.

Here’s the chicken flavoring…

As you can see there was a LOT of the sesame oil for this one.

So here’s the final product (click image to enlarge). As you can guess by the large amount of oil, it definitely had a lot of sesame flavor. What was not at all expected and a very pleasant surprise was of all things ginger. There was a nice little piece of tasty ginger in there – small yes, but bigger than I’d expect to be coming from a dry powder packet! So yes very good and also the chicken flavor was nice. I really liked it much more than I expected and am giving it a 4.25 out of 5 stars rating. Very tasty and a nice little zest. Excellent!

So some more Ve Wong – I think this is the 95th unique variety of instant noodles I’ve tried! Here we go!

Powder and oil – pretty standard…

I like the variety of veggies – should be interesting… The oil smells like sesame oil – which makes sense since its vegetarian.

So this stuff was pretty good! The vegetables inflated pretty well and I thoroughly enjoyed them. I’ll admit it sat for a minute or two before I ate it – I was helping tape some things my son was coloring! It was a really tasty batch of noodles and I’m happy to give it 3.0 out of 5.0 stars. I got this stuff literally a few years ago and it’s been sitting about 90 miles away in a dark cupboard since. It’s a strange one.

Non descript packets. I figure its chicken flavored.

And then this weird little thing. It’s a cellophane pouch with a little green piece of vegetable matter in it. Reading the ingredients, it says its onion and black pepper, but it looks like something else.

Inside the package was the noodles – in their own package.

Left side – silver packet, right side, funky nugget smooshed up.

Click image to enlarge. I think since it’s been a few years, these noodles just aren’t the way they’re supposed to be. They smelled funny and taste pretty awful. I won’t give them a rating this time. Thing is I haven’t seen them anywhere since that time a few years back. Hmm…

#119: Ve Wong Instant Oriental Noodle Soup Artificial Pork & Chicken Flavor (Mi Ga Suon Heo Khau Vi)

Chicken and pork. I have heard jokes about picken and chork made but never really thought of the two being brought together. I guess We’ll see if this combo works or not.

So the packets are quite large. The clear has seasoned oil and is real abundant to say the least. The silver contains veggies and some dry powder seasoning.

Look at that crazy goop! There’s so much of it… A veritable slathering of goo for all seasons.

Endgame (click image to enlarge). Boom. So here it is. Noodles are soft and kind of flat but not completely mushy. Broth is almost thick; its got some character. That goo packet added a lot of grease and my lips have it on them now. Good supply of veggies. I don’t know if it tastes like chicken or pork or chicken and pork or pork and chicken, but it does taste greasy like greasy chicken or and pork could have floated in this sea of noodles and veggies. My final – and I mean final thoughts on this pack of noodles is that I find them palatable. Tasty stuff. I’m giving these noodles a 3.4 out of 5.0 stars.  Of the many kinds I’ve had these don’t really stand out all that much but nonetheless its a tasty bowl of noodles. Some higher quality noodles might have got them a better score but not sure about that. They got a 3.4 instead of a 3.1 because at the end of the bowl I got the last of the vegetables – and there were a lot and they tasted VERY good. Get it here.

So Kit tried the Pork flavor of this line a while back. I thought chicken with shallots sounded quite nice so here we go. I must admit it feels like there’s a lot of pouches in this one!

At the top is the powder, then left is goop and right is veggies.

A lot of flavor stuffs here… The goop looked to be seasoned oil – I even gave it a little taste to see how it was and found it very odd. Kind of reminded me of cold chicken. The powder was ample and the veggies looked sufficient.

Its always interesting to me to see whether a bowl of noodles will be filling or not (click image to enlarge). For example I had Sapporo Ichiban Miso Ramen. Good stuff but really not very filling. This stuff however is. Lots of noodles – like a tighter woven noodle cake. The noodles are plentiful and just a slight cut above cheapo noodles. The broth is nice although it does have a kind of weird aftertaste that I can’t identify except in that I don’t find it exactly appealing. The veggies were decent. I’m going to give this one 3.25 out of 5.0 stars.

So again this morning asked Kit to choose which pack of noodles I should have. She told me to go ahead with the peppered beef. Sounds good to me!

Lotsa goo and a half powder half veggies packet.

The seasoned oil goo smelled quite delightful actually despite its poo-like imagery.

Click image to enlarge. The finished product here in all its glory. Noodles were on the mushy and boring side. The broth and veggies however weren’t bad at all. I’m starting to think it would be nice however to see the veggies float instead of getting so many at the very end. Hmm… Well, I liked this stuff. I’m giving it a 3.5 / 5.0. It tasted good and the artificial beef thingies in it were believable. Get it here.
