#456: Ve Wong Kung-Fu Artificial Szechuan Pork Flavor Instant Oriental Noodle Soup

Here’s something from Ve Wong. I’ve been enjoying these bowls so far – pork sounds good! I did review some Baijia pickled radish and duck flavor earlier, but honestly I couldn’t eat the whole thing it was so nasty – I only ate perhaps a 1/4 of it… So yeah here’s this one.

Two packets – seasoned oil and powdered seasoning. Pretty sinple.

The oil was a little congealed – just means it was cold. Looks like the Ve Wong stuff usually looks like…

Click image to enlarge. I added two very fried eggs to these noodles. Quite an interesting bowl of noodles today. The noodles themselves were great – a bit mushy but kind of buttery. The broth was nice and hearty and had a decent amount of veggies. Finally the whole thing came together as an enjoyable melange. I really enjoyed it. 3.75 out of 5.0 stars!

Hai Ya! Yet another bowl of Ve Wong’s Kung-Fu line or instant oriental noodle soups! Today it’s artificial beef flavor. Dig it!

Seasoned oil to the left, some powdery stuff to the right. Big silver packet so maybe some veggies?

Yup – veggies and soup base on the left and the seasoned oil on the right surfing atop the noodle block.

Click image to enlarge. One egg added – one fried egg. Let’s see here… The noodles were as they usually are – pretty good and slightly mushy. The broth was just salty enough, had a nice beef like flavor – very artificial… The veggies were quite abundant – I like that. Was great! 3.75 out of 5.0 stars for this sub-$1 bowl!

This place looks like they make the non-artificial style noodle soup! That thing is groovy!

Yeah – a history of forks!

Some beef tonight. This is beef noodle soup – pho bo. Artificial beef though… Shall we?

Clockwise from top left: vegetables, seasoned oil, powdered soup base, chili powder. Four packets – not too shabby!

Kind of a funky mess – weird but should be good I think.

Click image to enlarge. I added a smidge of roast beef. So it’s tasty! The broth has a nice pho bo flavor that’s for sure. Noodles are good too. A little touch of spiciness is very nice. All in all, I liked it! Decent interpretation of pho. 3.5 out of 5.0 stars.

Ve Wong commercial – not for this but closest I could find.

We’ve never seen this brand before andthought hey why not. My wife really likes mushroom flavor things so thought she could have this for lunch, minus a couple bites and slurps for reviewing purposes.

Three packets – big ones too! From right to left: powdered seasoning, black vinegar, seasoned oil.

Here’s everything sitting on the block of noodles. Added boiling water and covered and…

Click image to enlarge. …here we are! So the noodles aren’t bad. The broth is mushroom flavored and there are odd bits of things in there. My wife aptly referred to their flavor as ‘earthy’ and probably the ‘vegetarian minced meat’ as mentioned in the ingredients. Very greasy though… To be honest it wasn’t the most pleasant of the mushroom flavor instant noodles I’ve tried – I’m going to give it 1.75 out of 5.0 stars.

A video from India – said Vedan in the title so figured what the hey…

So while we were in California doing the Disneyland thing this summer, we went to a Ranch 99 and I got this. Never seen anything quite like it before; a fresh noodle bag, Chinese, and said it was enough for six people! I guess it’s time to give it a shot.

Whoa – not expected… Starch, seasoning packet and soup base packet.

Here are the noodles in their own pouch – very large I might add – and a a tasty little packet of desiccant. No really – don’t eat the desiccant.

Click image to enlarge. Sweet mother of god. Okay so I don’t like this at all. This is getting a 0.0 out of 5.0 stars. Very salty and funky. A big ‘not for this reviewer’ stamp! The starch created little gummy entities in it too! Ugh no no no. 0.0 out of 5.0 stars.

How weird; my wife got pineapple cake at the asian grocery earlier – a different brand though.

The old noodle timer! I’ll be making a 500th review noodle timer sometime soon! Yep – even more images flashing atcha faster and new music too.

Shramp! Nothin’ like shramp! Ami I wrong? AM I??? Well, I like shrimp and so today I will ingest a bowl of Ve Wong Shrimp flavor instant noodle soup from Taiwan. ‘Nuff said.

Seasoning on the left – as well as veggies and nice little shrimps! The seasoned oil was quite pungent – sesame and maybe fish sauce.

You can kind of make out the oil on the right upper middle – it’s the shiny stuff.

Click image to enlarge. I added a couple of fried eggs and some Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning since it was shrimp. Man, this was a nice little repast! Just enough noodles, a broth that wasn’t too salty and definitely not fishy. The veggies were of a good quantity and quality, and the little shrimp re-hydrated nicely and tasted great. Well, all of these things put together give it a 4.0 out of 5.0 stars – wasn’t expecting it would get such high marks but hey, a surprise like this is always nice! Look for it here.

This one seems a little unique. I never have seen something like a swastika on a bowl of noodles before – its somewhat foreboding to be honest! Taiwanese noodles with swastikas…  Well, I figured I’d better look this up and got this nice piece of information from Wikipedia:

Swastikas are widely used in Buddhist temples in China, and the symbol is most commonly associated with Buddhism.
Japanese maps use the swastika symbol to denote a Buddhist temple.[95] Hirosaki City in Aomori Prefecture uses this symbol as official emblem.
In Korea and Taiwan, maps use the swastika symbol to denote a temple. The swastika is also a very common sight at both rural and urban Buddhist Temples

So that pretty much clears it up for me.  Now lets continue.

I must again say it is strange to see these symbols on a bowl of noodles.

From the left: veggies, seasoned oil, and finally more veggies and a powder base.

All the ingredients atop the rice noodles. The noodles are very thin and wispy.

Click image to enlarge. I also must say I really like how it comes in a froyo cup. First thoughts: I tried a bite. The noodles are nasty. Its like eating cobwebs I think – or the fake cobwebs you put on things for Halloween. Yeah that’s more like it. Veggies also get a poo-poo as they don’t taste very good and hydrated very little. The broth was this one’s only saving grace – and it wasn’t too great. I’m not going to even continue eating this and I’ve only had maybe 1/32nd of it. Gross. Not palatable by Ramen Rater standards. 0.25 out of 5.0 stars. Yuck.

A short piece about how the swastika was used as a peaceful symbol long before it was perverted by the Nazis in WWII.

Yes, Halloween is coming shortly.

#523: Dragonfly Artificial Hot & Sour Shrimp Flavor Instant Noodles

Hate to say it but this is the last of the Dragonfly brand bowls I found at H-Mart… Bummer! I guess there’s a pork flavor out there in this line so hopefully I’ll end up scoring that one next time I go to H-Mart. Hot & sour shrimp… Sounds like Tom Yum flavor… I guess we’ll see…

Powder seasoning on the left and veggies on the right. Looks good so far – also there’s a fork included!

BABAGA!!! That’s quite a big interesting packet they threw in here! In the ingredient senction, this is called the ‘sauce pack.’ This is something I haven’t come across so far in my exploration of Dragonfly noodle bowls. Lemongrass, galangal, shrimp extract, kaffir lime leaves, lemon juice, garlic. Sounds like shrimp paste to me!

Paste, veggies and powder awaiting the scalding pain of boiling water.

Click image to enlarge. Added a couple pan-scrambled eggs. Put a couple shakes of salt and pepper on them too. So the noodles are typical Dragonfly – plentiful and bright, tasty and filling. The vegetables were everywhere and very tasty – even the carrot slivers were crunchy! Finally, the broth was perfection. It had a true shrimp and lemon and slight heat that was balanced in just the right amounts. Awesome – 4.5 out of 5.0 stars. Highly recommended for fans of Tum Yum flavor! Get it here.

Here’s one from Nathan in Vancouver, B.C. – looks interesting…

Not a lot of English on this one… I’ll have to win it I think.

Powder on left and a kind of thick packet of vegetables…

Hey it’s one of those little cakes of vegetables! Awesome!

Click image to enlarge. Finished! Wow so the noodles were quite decent – not spongy at all but having a dcent backbone and nice attitude about life. The broth had a nice flavor, not overwhelming but very tasty nonetheless. The veggies were definitely the highlight here – lots of cabbage and bits of other stuff in there – worthy!!! 3.75 out of 5.0 stars!

#585: Ve Wong Artificial Onion Flavor Instant Bean Thread Bowl

And on we go with the onslaught of instant noodles that I’ve not gotten to as they don’t look all that tasty. Today we start with some onion flavored bean thread.

Click image to enlarge. I really wish it was wheat flour noodles – this sounds pretty good. What I dislike about bean thread is how mushy and clumpy it is.

A couple of packets – the big one seemed to be mostly veggies but I detected some minor amount of powder as I dumped it. The seasoned oil on the right looks alien.

Had to mess with the contrast a bit to make this shot look like much. The pic came out mostly white! Looks like bout what you’d expect from onion bean thread soup.

Click image to enlarge. Here’s the deal: the noodles were pretty good for bean thread – they weren’t violently gloppy, but gloppy enough to be lame. What surprised me was the lack of flavor; I was expecting good flavor from a Ve Wong product but it’s pretty bland. Yuck. No fun. 1.5 out of 5.0 stars.

These look really different. I think I had some Vedan noodles a really long time ago and gave them an extremely low rating – hope it’s better this time!

Click to enlarge. Vegetarian meat, vegetarian meat powder, vegetarian minced meat – is this stuff made OF vegetarians? Danggui powder and chuanxiong powder eh?

Boy that gooey packet looks interesting – don’t you just want to eat that straight?

I’m very curious as to how this stuff is going to taste…

Let’s start with the bits of vegetarian meat. There are a lot of them and here’s what the looks like.

Click image to enlarge. This ain’t too bad at all! Was expecting some seriously nasty flavor here but I’m pleasantly surprised. The noodles are bouncy and full of vigor. The broth is very much a vegetable flavor and the meat bits are seeming to be textured vegetable protein. That broth flavor is a trip though – very different. All in all, not too shabby. 3.25 out of 5.0 stars!

The last time I had a bag of instant noodles like this I had a horrible experience; a ball of glued together, sticky, nasty funk. This time I’m a little more experienced and wiser and going to try a different method of attack.

Here’s the back (click image to enlarge). The only thing I can really understand here is 1800cc of water. That’s a lot! I’m going to take the noodles and break them into thirds and use around 500cc of water.

Dry seasoning and veggies on the left, cayenne powder in the middle and potato starch on the right. I used half the veggie pack, half the cayenne and none of the starch – that got me into the gloppy mess last time.

Click image to enlarge. Interesting stuff. The noodles aren’t my favorite, but they’re growing on me a little. What I did like about this was the broth. It had a very nice smoky, spicy and slightly fishlike flavor which I really liked. Still, the flavor does have an off-putting aftertaste which I found somewhat chemically and the noodles are really dry once you get your chew on. So I dunno. I’m giving it 2.1 out of 5.0 stars.

What’s with all the re-reviews you ask? Well, I’m stalled at review #599 as I’m awaiting the opportunity to review an pack of instant noodles that is pretty generic but has been overlooked. I should have it in my clutches VERY shortly. Decided for this one – beefy and sweet and spicy and I remember…

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge).

Me expenditure feel very well of taken care. Moving along.

Seasoned oil and dry seasoning.

These noodles are steamed, not fried.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added an egg. Used just under 400cc of water – it didn’t say how much water to use so I thought that would work. Work it did! The noodles are chewy and full of flavor, the broth is spicy and sweet and hearty.l Veggies aren’t too bad either. Awesome! 4.5 out of 5.0 stars!

Onward to #700! This is one of many sent to me by Michelle L. of New York! Thank you! Never seen this brand before – let’s give it a try!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge).

Seasoned oil on left and powdered seasoning and veggie packet on right.

Made this one by following the instant directions.

Click image to enlarge. Finished! Added 450cc water and covered for a few minutes. Added a couple scrambled eggs infused with Tony Chachere’s Creole seasoning. The noodles were very light and fluffy. The broth was wonderful – very tomato soup-like. Tasted great! The veggies were great too  – I especially liked the cabbage. Great stuff! 4.0 out of 5.0 stars!

I bet it smells rad in there!

This is epic indeed!

Here’s another from Michelle L. of New York.  I have a feeling it’s going to be good as well as spicy!

Here’s the back of the packaging (click image to enlarge)…

Two seasoning packets – the liquid one looks scary – very hot possibly! The onle on the right feels to be powdery.

The powder on the left looks a little wet – it’s cos I just took the bowl out of the dishwasher. I gotsta remember to dry them completely before the pictures – my bad.

Click image to enlarge. Whoa – check this stuff out ! Added a couple fried eggs. So it’s interesting. First, the noodles are very nice and plump and tasty. The broth is very thick, greasy and hot as well as a sweet tasting wonderful thing. I am quite surprised to be saying this as I usually abhor really greasy broth – but this works really well. Not a lot of veggie here but what there was was good. Niceness! 3.75 out of 5.0 stars!

This is a really neat video of Taiwan.

#609: Wei-Wei “A” Series Instant Noodles Artificial Hot Beef Flavor

Here’s another that was sent to me by Michelle L. of New York. This is something I’ve never had before – Wei-Wei brand. Wai Wai yes, Wei-Wei, no. The packaging is interesting – note the guy with the suave hat in the upper right. He’s there; on the scene – purchasing noodles . Let’s see if these noodles rock.  Note the economical 49 cent price tag!

Click image to enlarge.  I remember having a Vedan ‘Jaopai Series’ bowl of noodles a few years back that netted a zero star rating with some choice comments of it’s flavor. I’m hoping this is something different.

Two packets – a coagulated oil and flavoring liquid on the left and powdered seasoning on the right.

A very tightly woven block of noodles. Also very angular and flat.

Ready for 400mL of water.

Click image to enlarge. Added two egg plain omelet with Cavender’s All-Purpose Greek Seasoning and a couple squirts of Tabasco Buffalo Style hot sauce.  This steeped for three minutes. The noodles fluffed up an amazingly huge amount – like one of those capsules you put in the tub and turn into a dinosaur. Good noodles actually – fluffy and buttery. The broth is spicy but not to the point of pain. The veggies although sporadic are nice. Quite a good buy at 49 cents – 3.75 out of 5.0 stars – looks like “A” series is decent stuff!

Here’s yet another from Michelle L. of New York. I am really digging the “A” series so far!

Here’s the back of the packaging (click image to enlarge).

Powder on the left and oily base on the right.

Again like #609, the block is very angular and flat – you could rest a Slurpee on top of this without worry that it would fall over!

Dry seasoning on the left, oil seasoning on the right. This stuff was steeped with the noodles under an 80’s yearbook for four minutes…

Finished (click image to enlarge). So I made a couple eggs, scrambled them in the pan, put a touch of Colby cheese and some ketchup, turned it into an omelet, and finally a few pinches of Cavender’s Greek seasoning. Not bad – was a little greasy and the chicken flavor wasn’t super good. The noodles were nice though. Didn’t finish the broth though. Good amount of veggies. Last “A” was better. 3.25 out of 5.0 stars. Find it here.

Here’s another one that was sent to me by Michelle L. of New York! I know… Yep – it’s a swastika, the symbol of the national socialist party of Germany in WWII, the Nazis. Well, Wei-Wei isn’t a Nazi company or has anything to do with oppression. On the complete opposite side, in the far east it represents the whole of creation as well as Buddhism. Wikipedia says:

In Taiwan, Buddhist monks, nuns, and most lay followers eat no animal products or the fetid vegetables – traditionally garlic, Allium chinense, asafoetida, shallot, and Allium victorialis (victory onion or mountain leek), although in modern times this rule is often interpreted to include other vegetables of the onion genus, as well as coriander – this is called Su vegetarianism. Some Zhaijiao lay adherents do not eat any meat.

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge).

Veggies on the left, seasoned oil on the right.

The block and the seasonings. This one asks you add 400cc water and cover for a few.

Finished (click image to enlarge) – added a two egg omelet with a slice of Monterey Jack, a couple thin slices of deli turkey and some Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning.  One thing I like about these noodles – they suck up most of the water and really get nice and bulky! Very filling. The noodles aren’t bad. The vegetable flavor? Well, not too bad either. The actual vegetables were everywhere which is nice. Not very crunchy though. All in all not bad – 3.25 out of 5.0 stars! Get some here.

#624: Master Kong Artificial Pork Flavor Instant Noodle

Here we have one of the three packages I got yesterday as part of a gracious donation from a fellow named Chad B. of Highland, Il. Thanks again! Stickers coming soon! I haven’t tried Master Kong products before so I did a little reseasrch on Wikipedia:

Tingyi (Cayman Islands) Holding Corporation (Chinese: 康師傅控股有限公司), formerly (Chinese: 頂益(開曼島)控股有限公司) (SEHK322) is the largest instant noodle producer and Taiwanese enterprise in China. It specialises in the production and distribution of instant noodles, beverages, baked goods and soft drinks with its brand name, Master Kong (Chinese: 康師傅).[1][2]
The company was founded in Tianjin by the Wei brothers from Changhua County, Taiwan in 1991.[3] It was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 1996.[4]
It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ting Hsin International Group.[5][6]
In March 2011, Unilever was fined 2 million Yuan for the distribution of information about future price hikes and Tingyi was given a warning about publicly discussing their price increases.[7]
In June 2011, Master Kong was found by market research firm TNS to be the second most valued brand in China (after Sony).[8]

Wow so this stuff is where it’s at over in China eh? Let’s give it a try!

Here’s the back of the package (click image to enlarge). Note the allergy ‘warming!’ Also, no mention of how much water to add. This required me to guess – I tried it with 450mL of water which just wasn’t enough. After the four minutes, I stirred and let it sit for a minute or two more.

Top left is the seasoning powder, top right is the seasoned oil and at bottom the veggies.

There’s everything, awaiting some boiling water.

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added a couple fried eggs with some Cavender’s Greek seasoning. I like the noodles – they’re plump and not soggy or spongy (despite the extra time steeping) and they really soak up the flavor. The broth isn’t bad, although not a lot of it was left. The veggies are scant few but good. The pork flavor is really strong and good – I can see why this brand is popular if this is any basis on their product line. Good stuff – 3.75 out of 5.0 stars! I’m going to start including the UPC# on things so they might be easier to find online. UPC 6909146402423.

Here’s one that has been in the noodle bin since the trip to California my wife and son and I took in July! Time to eat. Mushroom pork just didn’t sound too good, but you know me, I have to try it.

I scanned the label for those so interested. Click image to enlarge.

Unexpected this is. Usually these are a bit less interesting. That big packet on top was absolutely full of powdered seasoning. Lower right is veggies and lower left was seasoned oil and maybe soy sauce – not sure.

See what I mean about the powder seasoning? Huge amount!

Finished (click image to enlarge). Added one fried egg with a little Krazy Mixed Up Salt on top. I gave it a try and must say it hit the mark as I expected. The noodles were okay – nothing amazing but not bad. The broth was slightly thick and almost slithery. It definitely had mushroom flavor going on as well as a funky pork fat taste. The veggies. The mushrooms were slimy and gross. Again, I’m not a big mushroom fan, but this really put me off. 1.25 out of 5.0 stars – at least my egg was good, but that didn’t add points to the score. UPC bar code is 4710008212638.

Something is going on in Korea.
